Zack and Miri (2008)

I know, I know, I edited the title, but I just didn't want any weird hits on the website. Ric and I judiciously decided to wait for the cheap theater to see this movie. I knew that this was a Kevin Smith movie, so I was pretty sure that the movie wouldn't end up being all that explicit, but I also knew that as a Kevin Smith movie there would be some shock value jokes that I wouldn't enjoy all that much. I guess that's my inner conflict with a lot of his movies. I think Smith is capable of writing some really genuine moments and some pretty funny jokes, but the lady inside of me just has its limits, and probably rightly so.
As you may have guessed, this movie is about two friends/roommates who decide to make an adult film because they are out of money and out of ideas. The whole idea is spawned because Miri got filmed by two teenage boys when she was changing at Zack's work, and the video was posted on the web, making her mildly famous for her granny panties. When the two go to their high school reunion, someone recognizes her, and she and Zack realize they could possibly makes some money off of her "fame". They go through auditions and use Zack's workplace (coffee shop) at nights to film. Of course, since they are starring in their own film, they are set to have a scene together, which will make them face whether or not they have true feelings for each other (take a wild guess).
Honestly, one of the most entertaining aspects of going to see this movie was the crowd at the cheap theater. I have never seen a theater so packed on a weeknight, but the theater was almost completely filled, and I was one of only a few girls there. Two rows behind us was a definite stoner, who verbalized pretty much everything that was going on in his little head. When the credits rolled, as each name came up, he would whisper to his friend, "Whoah, Jason Mewes is in this movie! He was in Jay and Silent Bob!" and "Hey, Justin Long is in this movie!". He did that for several cast members. Then, as those people actually made their entrances on the big screen, he would say, "Dude, it's Justin Long!" I laughed a lot at this guy, who was so obvious it was just too funny not to laugh at him. Then, there was this dude across the way who was extremely obese. Normally I wouldn't make fun of that. But he was so large that he had breathing trouble, and his breathing actually sounded like snoring. At one point, some guy turned around and told him to stop snoring, and he said, "Dude, it's the ice in my cup," and shook his cup. Hahahaha! Anyway, there were others as well, but it was an interesting discovery to see what kind of people show up on a week night to see a Kevin Smith movie about best friends making an adult film together.
The movie itself was pretty much what I expected. I liked a lot of the characters. I actually really like Seth Rogen and think he's a great regular guy who can be funny as well as endearing. Elizabeth Banks is cute as ever, and continues to be underrated as an actress. It was fun to see some of the other Smith favorites show up, especially being different characters than they usually play. Not all of the jokes and characters were hits, but that's pretty much what I expected. Some of the gags just made me cringe instead of laugh, but in a way, I'm glad that I'm not completely desensitized.
Overall, I feel pretty ambivalent about the movie. It was entertaining, and I liked Zack and Miri as characters, and I liked their relationship with each other. But it wasn't remarkable otherwise and I wouldn't necessarily recommend that everyone needs to see it, and I especially wouldn't recommend it to any of my sensitive readers.

1. It's the only Kevin Smith movie with TWO good actors in the leads.
2. Smith's getting better at tempering his personal voice in his scripts. Jason Lee and Jeff Anderson are the only actors who have ever been able to pull off the over-articulated sentences of Smith's nearly Runyon-esque style. Most the dialogue in Clerks II was dreadful, especially between Dante and Rosario Dawson who both spoke like the same person (guess whom?)
Mercifully, Zack and Miri had only one scene of longwinded Smith dialogue near the beginning, but since Rogan and Banks were shouting to each other in different rooms they were able to pull it off because they were sort of play-acting their conversation.
3. The premise of Zack and Miri finally provides a credible context for Smith's penchant for sex-themed jokes.
4. It's semi-autobiographical: no-budget movie makes overweight, bearded loser semi-famous then he wins the skinny girl who (presumably) is out of his league.
