Sunday School

Permalink 01:32:44 pm by matt, Categories: church

This Sunday will be the first for a new adult sunday school that I will be leading, although I'm not real comfortable with that word; let's go with facilitating. Less pressure there I think.

Anyway, we'll be discussing the scriptures using the common lectionary and church year as our guide. I'm pretty excited about it. I do have a couple of concerns. One is that the class will be much bigger that I originally thought. It's not that I want to discourage people from coming, it's just that I think a small class results in more, and perhaps deeper, participation. On the other hand, more participants may mean more discussion and less pressure on me to teach. I'm not about delivering truth. I'm much more interested in it arising from a group of believers searching and discussing the scriptures together.

With that in mind, I'd like to use this space in conjunction with the sunday school class. I'll be posting the weekly readings here and opening things up to discussion. As needed I'll post my notes, such as they are, as they become available. (Saturday nights in some cases.)

Here are the readings for next Sunday:

Genesis 50:15-21
Psalm 103:8-13
Romans 14:1-12
Matthew 18:21-35

Let me know what you think.

mattAlright, here's my notes. Feel free to comment, or not, on any of them.

Gen 50:15-21. Joseph as Christ. Brought back from the dead, servant to king (almost), forgives and saves those who meant to bring him harm.

Psalm 103 - God's mercy and forgiveness

Romans 14:1-12. We have mercy and forgiveness (see psalm 103), but with that comes responsiblity (v. 12), esp the responsibility to show mercy to others (see matt).

How closely does eating meat vs. vegitarianism equate with music worship vs. acapella, juice vs. wine, church building vs. home or coffee house, dunking vs. sprinkling? Please and your own.

we're accountable to god, not men, see matt 18:15-17

Matt. 18:21-35 - reading starts out pleasant and gets a bit rough.
