Had a nice conversation with a coworker over lunch today. We talked about, of all things, church. And by church, I really mean, The Church, as in the body of Christ. It's not the kind of conversation that generally happens in the teacher's lounge during a 20 minute break. (It's a nice thing that we weren't in the teacher's lounge.) It's not the kind of conversation that I usually have at all. Until lately. For some reason, I'm becoming more and more excited about what the Church could be, what it should be. I'm having these "strange" conversations where I express my disappointments about the Church and my hopes for it. And I'm finding a lot of common ground, it seems, with the people I'm talking too. And I'm having these conversations outside of the church building with people from my "real" life. I'm not sure what's going on, but it's kind of cool.
I mentioned in my intro post something about the emerging church. It's something that I'm still trying to get my head around a bit. But it is the reading I'm doing about what these churches are doing, that is leading to the kind of conversations I'm having with unexpected people. Here's an article about the emerging chuch from Christianity today. Emergent-uk is a British resourch for the e.c.; they have a lot of articles here. And here are some articles by Brian McLaren who wrote the book I mentioned a few posts ago, Generous Orthodoxy. Finally, theoblogy is a e.c. blog I've recently discovered.
It seems that much of this emerging church action is very British, or very urban. Subconciously I think I'm looking for ways to make it work rurally.
I'd be interested to know what my 5 (or so, at last count) readers think.
Peace
