Covers

This week I've been catching up on some new music by a two of my favorite artists.

First up is The Flaming Lips, who participated in the compilation Covered, a Revolution in Sound, in which current artists on the Warner Bros. label cover classic songs from the label's catalog. The whole album is mostly terrible (I thought Adam Sandler's version of "Like a Hurricane" would be the worst, but The Used actually managed to out-suck him with their version of "Burning Down the House").

The album does at least bring us a cool recording of The Black Keys covering Captain Beefheart, and The Flaming Lips (featuring Stardeath & White Dwarfs) doing Madonna's "Borderline." This, again, is one thing I love about The Flaming Lips: they're not too cool to embrace a pop musician like Madonna. They totally make the song their own, though, and there's even a neat video to go with it, directed by perpetual Flaming Lips collaborator George Salisbury (aka Particle).

A much cooler compilation idea is the War Child Heroes CD, in which legendary musicians pick a song from their own catalog and nominate a younger artist to cover it. Bob Dylan picked Beck to cover "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat." Very cool.

Here's the song:
