My favorite Sandman moments: #9
We're still in The Kindly Ones, and the furies are bringing a blood vendetta against Dream. In issue #64 they arrive at his palace and are denied entry by the gatekeepers.
Dream's gatekeepers are a hippogriff, a dragon, and a griffin. They talk, but they haven't really been developed much as substantive characters. All we really know about them is that they are very powerful and are fiercely loyal to their master.
The furies, denied entrance, declare their intent to fight their way in. The griffin attacks:
I love the way Gaiman lends the wyvern's character much more depth of emotion in just a few panels. It always chokes me up a little when he says, "You killed my friend, woman. Stray from your path."
I do have a tenth favorite Sandman moment that should be no surprise to anyone who has read the series, but I'm not going to tell about it here for the sake of those who have not. Suffice it to say that it is the first several pages of issue #69.
