Amazing Story
I just heard an amazing story on NPR about C.P. Ellis, a man who was a leader in the Ku Klux Klan, but quit to become a civil rights activist. NPR was talking about him because he has just passed away. They told about his story, and the events that led to his radical change.
In the early 1970s, Ellis was appointed as a representative to head a forum on integrating schools, with the purpose of disrupting progress at the meeting. During the ten days, though, Ellis became friends with civil rights leaders participating in the forum, and he became sympathetic to their cause. He left the KKK and began working for civil rights causes. I encourage you to listen to the NPR story to hear about his life from Ann Atwater, the woman Ellis befriended during that meeting. It is a truly inspirational story about the transforming power of faith and love. Apparently, the two remained friends for life, and are the subject of a documentary called An Unlikely Friendship.
