Is it Friday again already?
Here's a star-spangled, red-white-and-blue, all-Americana random ten list from my iTunes (with bonus commentary, because I liked it that one time I did it).
Race for the Prize (Eve Sessions on 4/21/2000) - The Flaming Lips This is a pretty cool alternate mix from The Soft Bulletin Companion, another bootleg the band encourages fans to distribute freely.
Grandpa's Interview - Neil Young A pretty cool song from the Greendale album. This acoustic live version is one I captured from the DVD that came with the CD. I like Neil Young playing solo better than with the full band.
The Star Spangled Banner (live) - Jimi Hendrix You can't get any more Americana than this. Great stuff.
To the Teeth (live) - Ani Difranco There seem to be a lot of live tracks on this mix. Naturally, this is a great performance from Ani.
A New Way of Driving - B.B. King Now we're getting back to the roots of American music.
Voodoo Child - Jimi Hendrix Experience And more Jimi to follow, appropriately enough. I could write a pretty good essay on blues and rock with just this playlist.
Hell's Angels Cracker Factory - The Flaming Lips Here my mix diverts into extreme acid rock with some old and very experimental Flaming Lips. This is their infamous 23-minute instrumental noise track from Telepathic Surgery. Filled with heavy guitar distortion, motorcycles revving, piano, creepy voices, and a little James Brown answering machine recording thrown in, this...um, "song" is not for the weak of heart.
He's a Mighty Good Leader - Beck A beautiful song from a uniquely post-modern folk singer. Great stuff.
Insomnia and the Hole in the Universe - Live Probably the only disappointing result on the list, this song brings back some strange memories of high school.
Elvis Ate America - Passengers And to top it all off, a tribute to one of the best-loved American musicians of all time, executed by U2 and Brian Eno.
Tune in next week to see Kyle try to find patterns in another seemingly random selection of songs.
