Fall TV - The Story So Far

There are still a couple shows on deck that I'm really waiting for (30 Rock, Friday Night Lights) but I figured that now that the bulk of fall TV has started I should post my thoughts and we can start the TV chatter.  I currently am watching WAY too many TV shows right now, but I'm sure at least one will be canceled and I'll probably get tired of some as well.  Here's a quick rundown.

Monday

How I Met Your Mother - Pretty strong start.  Needs a bit more Marshal.
Heroes - I wish I knew how to quit you.

Tuesday

90210 - Yes, I am addicted to teen soap operas. I just can't help myself.
Melrose Place - Really started with a bang and I am a big fan of Stephanie Jacobsen (Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, Battlestar Galactica: Razor) so I'll keep watching.

Wednesday

Glee - I don't want to love this show, but I can't help myself.  It's funny, well written, the music is great, and Jane Lynch is a comedy genius.  My pick for best new show, which means it will probably be canceled.

Thursday

FlashForward - Okay, I was wrong, this is the best new show and is a great way to fill that Lost void in my heart, especially the one that will be there when it's gone for good.
SNL Weekend Update Thursday - A nice little dose of pretty much the best segment on the show.
Parks and Recreation - Off to a great start this season, hopefully it can build an audience.  Aubrey Plaza is awesome.
Community - Chevy Chase, I'm sorry I doubted your greatness, but hopefully you understand.
The Office - My old roommate Curtis thinks the show has lost all grip on reality.  I honestly don't care.
Fringe - Lots of crazy goings on, definitely has that X-Files vibe, which I think is a good thing.  Hopefully they'll keep the momentum going.
Vampire Diaries - Just might be my first drop of the season.  After three episodes the only thing that's kept me interested is Maureen from Freaks and Geeks.

Friday

Dollhouse - Sad to see that not even Jamie Bamber and Alexis Denisof guest appearances could help boost the ratings.  I'll stand by you, Joss.

Sunday

The Simpsons - Best season opener in years.  Seriously.  If they can't keep it up, they need to just hire Seth Rogen or something.
Mad Men - Still the best show on TV.  I'm loving the insane goings-on this season.
Entourage - My guilty pleasure.  I've really enjoyed Gary Cole this season.
Bored to Death - Actually, put this in a three way tie with Glee and FlashForward for best new show.  Schwartzman and Galifianakis are fantastic but it's Ted Danson who really steals the show.
Curb Your Enthusiasm - In just two episodes this season LD and crew have shown why this is the funniest show on television right now and possibly ever.  I can't imagine what will happen once the Seinfeld cast joins the mix.

So there you have it, my brief synopsis of what I'm watching.  Add in football and some wrestling (yeah, I'm still on that kick too) and that is pretty much my sad life.  What are you guys watching?  Feel free to chime in with your thoughts on new shows and the shows you can't stop watching.

Really? I think Chevy is what is holding this show down. I just don't find him even remotely funny. If want to see Chevy when he was funny, I'll watch Christmas Vacation.

The Office - "My old roommate Curtis thinks the show has lost all grip on reality. I honestly don't care." If you want reality, watch E!. The Office is so incredibly funny.

Man I wish I had HBO, I would love to watch Curb.

I guess we just have different tastes. I love Joel McHale, but Chevy Chase is what makes that show for me.

Last week's The Office was not one of my favorites. Sometimes Michael is so out of control that it's hard to understand why they haven't fired him and had him committed.

You should see Ric when he watches Community. I have to pause the tv every time Chevy Chase says anything, because Ric's busting up laughing.

Has Curtis watched the more recent Office episodes? I thought things went astray with the Dwight/Angela drama and too many excursions outside of the actual office, but it's gotten a lot better. The opening episode about gossip was hilarious.

I think Curtis has the same issue that Danny has and also that Dwight is now basically a cartoon character. He's one of those BBC snobs though, so whatever.

Danny, I think they've (sort of) explained that away by the fact that despite his ineptitude at management, his branch has the best sales numbers and when push comes to shove he can get things done.

Heroes - Why would you want to quit? It's candy; nothing of substance, probably bad for you, but it's just a delight. Nothing says Happy monday like screaming obscenities at that dumbfuck Peter Patrelli. What a douche.

90210 - I got totally hooked on it, then we were in the middle of a move and I couldn't watch it, fell behind about half way through season one. I really want to catch up on it . . . I can't say why I like it so much. My wife doesn't care why, she loves that she can hold it over my head. The problem is, I get NBC at home on my bunny ears. ABC/Fox come in, but poorly -- so if it's not on NBC, I usually resort to hulu/netflix. None of these will allow me to catch up. Will have to resort to netflix disc shipping. . . my wife wont' be happy our precious 1-disc-at-a-time is delivering teenage drama.

Glee - Why don't you want to love it? It's probably the best written thing on TV right now -- it's sharp, witty and somehow manage to sneak a few in each episode that are at once the obvious joke and yet, somehow clever -- I haven't figured out how they do that yet. I can't get enough of it.

Community - On par with glee in terms of writing/wit/pacing -- surprisingly brilliant. I've always liked Joel, but I underestimated him. Nice to see chevy chase delivering something good again, too. I won't say he makes the show for me -- but his interaction with Joel is superb.

FlashForward - What channel is that on, I haven't watched it. I had absolutely zero interest in it, but if you say it's the best new show, it's going into my Netflix queue.

Fringe: Generally speaking, I love this show--but I found the season opener to be quite weak with a lot of holes.

Dollhouse - No amount of stunt casting will bring up its ratings. I enjoy watching it, but I can't really make an argument for it. I don't think it is in any way fan service to Whedon fans; nor do I think it brings much to the table for general audiences. I don't know what the target demographic is. . . I think it belongs on SyFy. On that note, why aren't you watching Eureka and Warehouse 13?!

Curb Your enthusiasm -- I love Larry David, but there's no way for me to watch this one.

Dexter - Oh how I love thee, hopefully amazon unbox carries it again this season as it did the last few.

No House?

Netflix has the season premiere of Dexter. I forgot that one. I love the show. John Lithgow this season is insanely creepy.

FlashForward is on ABC. Seriously check it out.

Glee - I guess it's just the comparisons to High School Musical that people make, which are total crap.

Heroes - Indeed, it's the show I love to yell at. It's just gone up and down so many times that I'm just very frustrated, yet I can't stop watching since I feel like I've invested so much time.

No House. I only have so many hours in the day and in the beginning I passed because it didn't scream out to me.

The thing is, Brendo, people are stupid. Because there are two things in the media with singing in them, they are presumed to be the same . . . but they are foolish. And Glee is surprisingly awesome -- and certainly not tailored to a tween demographic.

Yeah, Heroes is the show we love to yell at as well. . . especially Peter Patrelli and Matt Parkman. Such idiots . . .

The bottom line is, save for a handful of characters--Syler, Bennet, Angella--the characters are all flat, single-dimmensional and altogether moronic. BUT they have super powers.

That said, why DO I watch it?! Maybe to figure out why I watch it. . .

Did you watch Kings during its run?

Glee will have a second season. I heard it on PTI, so it must be true.

P.S. my fiancee showed me the football team dancing to "Single Ladies", pure gold.

FAMILY GUY!!!

And this season's opener was especially entertaining because it used several different styles of animation as Stewie and Brian travelled to different parallel dimensions. Including Washington Post, claymation, real life, Flintstones, and Disney (Jews not allowed in that dimension).
