WTF of the Day: Let the Right One In Ruined by DVD Subtitles

Icons of Fright News and Updates: Let The Wrong Subtitles In To LET THE RIGHT ONE IN?!

About 20 minutes into the screening, I was absolutely horrified.

The subtitles had been drastically changed since the last time I saw it, and dare I say... had been completely dumbed down? Sure, the basic gist of what the characters were saying was kind of there, but missing completely was the dark humor, subtleties and character nuances which made the movie so powerful and a favorite amongst audiences last year. I tried to carry on and ignore it, hoping that only a few of the translations were off... but... I was wrong. Just about the intent of every single line of dialogue was completely off and ruined the movie.

I actually watched this for the first time last night and since I hate dubbed movies I turned on the subtitles instead. I loved the movie, but I felt like something was lost in translation a bit. I'm glad to know it wasn't just me and it wasn't the film itself. I'm sure most folks won't even notice but it's a real shame when something like this happens to a foreign movie release, since they have so much working against them already. I really hope this is rectified, especially since I was considering purchasing the DVD. It's a great movie. It looks amazing. It's really creepy but also beautiful at times. Definitely a great twist on the the vampire genre. Hopefully the power of the internets will rectify this.

I actually saw it at the theater and still felt like something was lost in translation. But I am a minority on this movie, which I liked well enough, but did not love.

As a horror movie fan, I am pretty happy with this edition, even if the subtitles aren't exactly like they were in the theater. I think the horror comes across well and the film is none the less a great film!
The translation is actually more literal and surprisngly accurate I think. Besides the US release is the only DVD release that has the deleted scenes and the bonus footage included. To me that makes it still worth buying this edition. I know the story of the film and it still has all the suspense that I expect from a horror film. Totally cool!!

I still can't believe they won't replace the bad copies. Also, someone made a point that since the bad copies are still out there (they aren't doing an actual recall), if you order it on Amazon you won't know which version you'll get.

Sean, you have a point but I'm going to have to disagree. As someone who saw the film for the first time with the crappy subtitles, when I found out the differences I was seriously bummed. It brought out a lot of the subtext and humor that was in the original movie, in the original language. Yes, the horror is there even with the bad subtitles, but the elements that make it a really amazing movie are tainted. The conversations between Oskar and Eli and Eli and her guardian, especially. I mean, some of the conversations between Eli and her guardian were so bastardized, I almost missed the major plot subtext of their relationship and what it meant for Oskar. I'm sure a lot of people did miss it.

I sooo can't wait for this to arrive from my netflix. I don't know which copy I'll receive but all I know is that it is getting rave reviews for being an awesome movie. I didn't see any big deal there about subtitles like here. It has high ratings. Maybe netflix has a different version. Maybe the subtitles aren't taking away from experiencing the movie.

WOW! I love this film in every way. Finally a new vampire film that rocks my world. Not sure if it is a horror film, but it definitely is an intelligent story that I really like.
