First off, if you're remotely interested in seeing this movie you MUST see it in 3D and you must go soon since the 3D engagement appears to be limited from everything I'm reading. I'm going to admit right now that I haven't read the Neil Gaiman book yet. I'm catching up on everything Gaiman though as I've loved everything of his I've read so far. So I honestly have no idea how good of an adaptation this movie is. Either way, the movie is amazing. The animation is just gorgeous and the 3D adds so much detail and texture, much more than The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D. Director Henry Selick brings back the magic of his previous stop motion efforts with this one and in a huge way. It's a pretty simple story about a girl who finds a door into the world of her dreams but with enough twists and turns to keep even the most jaded viewer enraptured. I was so transfixed I managed to block out the hoard of noisy teenagers in the front row, so that's saying something.
If you're expecting The Nightmare Before Christmas, you're going to be disappointed. First off, this is not a musical. However, the score and songs are very beautiful and go with the movie quite well. TMBG fans will be overjoyed to hear John Linnell as the singing voice for John Hodgman's character in a fun little tune. If you're thinking about taking small children you might want to think twice. It gets a little dark at times and I heard a few children crying in our theater. I would say this would be a great movie to take an older kid to though. Here's hoping Gaiman and Selick will team up again sometime. Judging from this film, they're a wonderful match.
