Show Review: Son of Heatwave @ Plush

Son of Heatwave @ Plush

Sorry about the crappy camera phone picture. I really need to start remembering my camera when I go to things like this. Phil and I met up with our friend Jed at Plush Cafe in Fullerton on Friday night to see our friends Son of Heatwave. Formerly known as Piltatope, these guys have a retro sound but make it very much their own. They have great keyboards, which I always dig. They didn't get to play for very long but they played my personal fave, "the is in Christmas," which we featured on our pop.vox.christmas volume 2 compilation. Brax also was in attendance and has his own thoughts on the show. I highly recommend checking these guys out the next time they play if you live in the Orange County area.

I was very impressed with the remodeling Plush has done to their venue area. It used to be much smaller and pretty cramped. It's still on the small side but there is a lot of seating. There's also a full bar and kitchen and the prices are very reasonable. Also on the bill were The Steelwells, a pretty good folk/alternative band, and Tony Lucca, a former mouseketeer turned singer/songwriter. Yeah, that's right, I saw Tony of MMC fame. He was also on that short lived show Malibu Shores with Kerri Russell. His music was pretty decent. If you're into Jason Mraz and acts like that, you should definitely check him out.

Overall it was an excellent night of free entertainment. It's easy to go into hermit mode when you're unemployed so it's always great to get out. It seems like there's a real scene starting to build in Fullerton and hopefully that will continue.
