Impossible Task?

Yesterday's BlogFodder is titled "The Task." The task is this: Invent a way for weblog authors on different ends of the politcal spectrum to meet and talk. I was just thinking about this because it seems we have failed to do this at brendoman.com. Political discussion turned into personal attacks, people got upset, and now things are kind of dreary here. In order for something like this to happen, people would have to stop the personal attacks. People would have to start respecting each others viewpoints, no matter how rediculous they might think they are. Then maybe we could have some kind of common ground where we could start discussing things, only by challenging arguments using real evidences and not feelings and free of personal attacks. For awhile, it seemed like that was happening, but it doesn't look like it is anymore.

i hear ya. couple nights ago i was at a men's bible study, and we talked a little about the war. when saddam's using chemical weapons on his own people came up, one guy didn't believe it! i think my jaw hung slack for a few seconds, but i had to suppress the urge to launch into my brother in Christ cuz he's unaware of facts. it seems very difficult for many people (left or right) to separate emotions & such from political discussions. personally, i think that's why i have a natural aversion to discussing politics with people other than those with similar beliefs. not because i'm afraid of my views being challenged or hearing a different point of view, but because it almost inevitably gets emotionally charged and bitter. ya, when i saw that Blogfodder, i thought about it for like 10 seconds, then abandoned it as (almost) hopeless.

it's quite a shame that we dont' know exactly what's going on because there are so many fabrications and propaganda floating around.
