This is Better?

From the NY Times, on women's rights in the Iraqi constitution:

Women's rights.

Shiite religious leaders want to reverse a 1959 law that settles domestic concerns-issues of marriage, divorce, and inheritance-in civil courts, and move such matters to religious courts. Under an earlier draft of the constitution, women would be stripped of their rights to inherit property on an equal basis as men, and their legal protections in case of divorce would be weakened. Some women also fear that a provision in the TAL requiring that women hold at least 25 percent of the National Assembly seats may be scrapped. Some women's groups want to boost the quota to 40 percent or greater.

I thought we were supposed to be making Iraq a better place for women, right?

So we have spent hundreds of billions of dollars on this war, killed tens of thousands of Iraqis, lost almost 2,000 American troops, and for what? To create an Islamic state that will severely limit the rights of women?

And this is supposed to be better?

UPDATE: Here is some background - a look at the roles and rights of women prior to the fall of Sadam.

CHAPTER TWO: Rights and Freedoms

Part One: Rights

Article (14): Iraqis are equal before the law without discrimination because of gender, ethnicity, nationality, origin, color, religion, sect, belief, opinion or social or economic status.

Honzo...sure, the consitution may say that. But when other parts of the constitution do the opposite, what does that mean? If the law is changed so that divorce needs to go in front of an Islamic court instead of a state court, what will that mean for women?

An earlier draft of the constitution would have limited women's ability to inherit property and limit their rights in terms of divorce.

One statement in a constitution may be good, like the one you pointed out. But if other clauses in the constitution say something different, it makes Chapter 2, Part 1, Article 14 pretty worthless, doesn't it?

How long did it take for us to grant women equal rights after the ratification of our Constitution? 200 years? How long has it been for Iraq? Oh it's not even done yet? I guess it's going to take a little bit longer than 5 minutes after all.

That is a strawman.

We are supposed to be liberating the country - men and women. Not making things worse for women.

I guess it's going to take a little bit longer than 5 minutes after all.

Maybe you should tell your "leaders" that. They are the ones who thought this would easy.
