Media Bias?
So...AgapePress, the online news site for the American Family Association, directed me to a new study on "media bias". AgapePress reported the following results - the higher the score, the more "liberal": Wall Street Journal - 85.1 Well...the first thing that caught my eye was that the Wall Street Journal ranked as the most "liberal" of the media in the studied...yea, I think that we have a problem here. Any time you do social research, you must look at your findings and compare it to what you know. In this case what we know is that the Wall Street Journal is far from being liberal. So I took a look at the actual study, surprised at what I felt was faulty methodology:
Their idea of bias was whether or not a media outlet cited certain "think tanks" more than congressman. There are clear reliability problems with this methodology.
Citing liberal think tanks does not equate with liberal bias, as is proven by this studies findings where The Wall Street Journal is liberal! There is do doubt that the media leans Democrat (I refuse to say liberal, because the Democratic Party is NOT liberal), but this study has failed to prove it. Comments, Pingbacks:

I'm currently reading Ari Fleischer's book, "Taking Heat". It's a combination of his memoirs as press secretary to President Bush and an observation of the media. Of course it has a conservative bias (the book), but he is remarkably fair to the media. He points out their obvious bias but he's really fair in pointing out that their biggest bias is towards reporting or even creating conflict.
His conclusion is that we do have a liberal biased media, but we also have the best media in not only the world, but in the history of mankind. interestingly, he grew up a Jewish Democrat from New York.
It seems the study mostly looks at how "liberal" media sources are purely in relation to our nation's leaders. By this standard, given that our government is conservative, a truly unbiased news source (if that were possible) would have to be "liberal" by comparison--which is actually very close to what we have in America.
You're right, Roland, in saying that our media's biggest bias is toward reporting conflict. This is the problem with ratings-driven news reporting, and is why the best journalism in America is that practiced by not-for-profit outlets like NPR.

A funny example that Ari Fleischer gives was when Colin Powell h ad given a speech that encouraged the use of condoms to prevent STD's. The press had a field day trying to create a conflict between him and the President, when in reality the President agreed with his remarks in the context in which he gave them.
Referring to some of Powell's charity work, Fleischer told the press that no one knows abstinence better than Colin Powell to which the press started laughing. Taken out of context, Fleischer had just told them that Colin Powell practices abstinence. He had to make a fast ohone call to Powell's office before the press, or worse, Alma Powell, got to him first! :-)
That is great!
And I definitely agree about media creating conflict...the media is much more about conflict (which in turn creates better ratings) than about being left or right. Leave a comment:
