Kyle"How Much Has the Flaming Lips Drug Use Increased?"

It's actually exactly the complete opposite of what you might think. The band used drugs most heavily in their early days. The most prominent drug user was Mark Coyne, who quit the band after their self-titled debut EP.

The band's current members all admit to having tried drugs in the past, but according to The Flaming Lips from A to Z, "D is for Drugs. Believe it or not, the Lips don't do any! Go figure!" According to friends of the band, that's the honest truth. Steven Drozd recently conquered his heroin addiction, making the band totally clean.

That means they've made some of their most bizarre and innovative movie without the aid of drugs. As my wise wife Erika said, "If this is the kind of stuff you come up with while sober, who needs drugs?"

AndrewI seem to remember a previous entry you made about the Flaming Lips' documentary, where you mentioned the drug issue. Or maybe you didn't. Either way, I'm not really surprised that they don't use drugs. I can't understand how anyone can remain creative while addicted. It seems that the inevitable crash comes much, much sooner rather than later. It is impossible, however, to make music like they do and not have teh question constantly arise.

By the way, I finally got to "Yoshimi Battle the Pink Robots" Parts 1 and 2, and finally, the weird stuff.

If you want to hear really weird, listen to the Boredoms or Space Streakings. Or Melt Banana or U.S. Maple, for that matter.

AndrewSomehow I never thought I'd like the Flaming Lips, but it probably helped that Kyle gave me pieces of their entire career to ease me into the later stuff.

GoForDrugRehabMusic, particularly rock, has somehow been associated with drugs, starting with the "glam rock" trend which was popular in the 80s and 90s. Perhaps it is the notion that "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" can make one "cool" that makes drug uses among performers quite common. Of course, we heard of artists whose drug abusive behaviors have destroyed not just their lives and relationships but also their careers.

However, it is good to know that there are rock bands that are drug-free. They are good examples that entertainment and drugs don't have to mix.

Artists who are in the grips of drug addiction should enrol in drug rehab centers (an example would be Charter Day Care) to save their lives and careers.
