eeeeeeeeeeeeeesh

Oh man! We went to De Luca's for the office birthday lunch today and I had alfredo sauce for the first time in years, along with plenty of yummy carbs. I've been in a food coma all afternoon and now my chest is feeling it. When the heck did I start reacting to food this way?!

Follow the Fleet (1936)

As some may recall, back in January I recorded a bunch of Fred Astaire and Ginger Roger movies, and it took me a while to watch all of them. Follow the Fleet was one that I don't think I had seen in the past, and I found it a very refreshing take on the guy-girl dancing team movies by the famous duo. A sailor comes ashore and finds his old dancing partner/girlfriend and re-starts their relationship, while one of his buddies starts up a new relationship with the girlfriend's sister. The sister, Connie, decides to fix up her father's boat so that her new man, Bilge, can be captain. But in order to pay for the renovations, they all have to come together and put on a show, and things get complicated when Astaire's character, Bake, can't get leave to go ashore and be in the show.

What's different about this movie is that Ginger Rogers didn't have to play hard-to-get, which resulted in a much more comfortable dynamic between the lead roles. And instead of a more classy social atmosphere, the people here are a bit more down to earth. Astaire takes on an easy accent and shows a side of himself I hadn't seen before.

I wish I had written down notes about it, but I really enjoyed this one. It's a little bit more fun and creative with its plot. The dances, as always, are impeccable, and the sets are impressive in a more subdued way. Yet another one checked off my list! I think I still have a few of theirs I haven't yet seen, but it was nice to finally see this one.

Thoughts that passed through my mind while I looked at the new Watchmen stills this morning

(These images come straight from the source)

Comedian

The Comedian doesn't look too bad, but the image has kind of a faux-grainy, airbrushed MTV look to it. Not exactly realistic, but not horrible either.

Nite Owl

I see Zack Snyder is channeling Tim Burton's Batman for the Nite Owl character. Again, not quite what I think the story calls for. I really wish directors and costume designers would quit slapping plastic armor on every live-action superhero they see, especially in Watchmen. Don't they realize how stiff that makes their movements? Watchmen is about the real-world practicalities of superheroes, not this over-glamorized stuff.

Ozymandias

Are those plastic nipples? And a belly button? Are these people taking design tips from Joel Schumacher now?

Rorschach

Well, this is much, much better. But then, Rorschach's costume is just a trench coat, a hat, and a black & white mask. I guess that's pretty hard to get wrong.

Silk Spectre

What the hell is Laurie supposed to be doing here? Seriously, has there ever been an occasion in the history of mankind when a person has had a practical reason to adopt such a pose?

I think the best we can hope is that these are merely promotional images that have little do with the actual look of the final film. Maybe it's a really clever plot point wherein the characters in the world of the film posed for fake publicity shots, but they are actually the authentic and practical human beings that we see in the comic book.

Or maybe Zack Snyder is making Watchmen into just another glamorous big-budget action film.

Why couldn't Paul Greengrass have been allowed to direct his version?

I Caved

Profilactic.com - brendoman's mashup

Now that I have a Blackberry and an EEE PC I have definitely become a mobile geek. Since I have an unlimited data plan I loaded up Google Talk on the Crackberry and then went one step further by finally signing up for Twitter. I think Twitter is a lot more useful if you have a mobile device. There are a lot of interesting folks posting on there with lots of good links and other information. Yesterday I also found a new site called Profilactic (clever name, for sure) that allows you to create a mashup of your various blogs, social networking profiles, and bookmarking sites along with a bunch of other stuff. It's actually pretty neat since you can create a page that is a one stop shop for all your sites that you can give out to folks instead of 80 different URL's. Still, none of this means much if you don't have anything to say. I'd like to think I do. Some would probably beg to differ though.
