The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

I know, I know.. a more recent book selection than I usually choose, isn't it? But it's good for me to branch out, and yes, a Sci-fi book from 1979 is branching out for me.

If you haven't read it or seen the movie, it follows Arthur Dent when his previously-unknown-as-an-alien friend Ford Prefect hitchhikes a ride for the two into space right before the Earth is destroyed. They join a bunch of interesting characters, including the President of the Galaxy, on a quest to find the answer to the ultimate question.

Adams' style is dry but clever, and sometimes almost too much so, but I enjoyed listening to this book. It contains a lot of random humor, which I enjoyed a lot, especially hearing the thoughts of a whale who is born into space and doomed to die as soon as he finishes falling to the ground.

The movie adaptation is a good one that actually adds in more plot than the book contains, rather than editing a lot out. I think the changes that were made were completely appropriate and maintained the spirit of the book.

One thing is certain, and that's that some authors have minds that some of us will ever understand. How a person can create new worlds with such complete histories and sets of rules, and then fill those worlds with creative events and plenty of jokes, I'll never comprehend.

Back to the older classics after this, though!

WTF of the Day: Uwe Boll is Officially Insane

Uwe Boll Wants to Take Down Indiana Jones?!? - Cinematical

Always one for saying ridiculous crap to get publicity, Uwe Boll doesn't disappoint with his e-mail about the upcoming release of Postal, which includes this gem:

Boll first offers that "On the Indiana Jones weekend -- May 23 -- we will go out and destroy Indiana Jones in the Box Office! We all know that Harrison Ford is older as my grandpa and his time is up."

I really want to know what Uwe Boll is smoking and where I can get some. It must be awesome. I know all Boll wants is for people like me to make a post exactly like this, but I just couldn't resist, especially when he starts saying his movie is also better than Jaws and Schindler's List. A friend of the blog attended a test screening of Postal and didn't hesitate to say it's the worst movie she's ever seen and not in an Ed Wood kind of way. I still might rent it just because I'm curious, but my money will go to Indy on May 23rd. Sorry, Uwe.
