Yet another entry checked off on my quest to see all Hitchcock movies, The Man Who Knew Too Much features Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day as a couple who are vacationing in Morocco at the wrong time. They witness the death of a man who imparts a secret to them before he dies. That secret places them and their son in danger, and sends them on a rushed mission to put things right before it's too late.
The story starts out a bit slowly, and I was waiting for it to kick into gear long before it did. Once all the establishing story is finally out of the way and the dying man has his big scene, the movie transforms into a great mystery-suspense thriller.
I always knew Doris Day was famous for singing the Oscar-winning song "Que Sera, Sera", but never knew that it came from this movie! Now that I've seen it, I'd have to say that although I love Doris Day, I don't prefer her singing in TMWKTM. She has a great voice, but here it's harsh and piercing in its powerfulness. I know she's capable of softer tones, because I loooove Calamity Jane. Here, her singing breaks out of the quiet tones of Hitchcock and slaps you across the face with the fact that she can sing. Yay.
Despite that, the climactic scenes in this movie are awesome. I love that the showdown happens at the Royal Albert Hall during a concert featuring not only a full orchestra but a chorus as well! The mounting music and the moments where Doris Day is searching the hall combine perfectly together for ultimate audience suspense.
While some of the plot details are explained away a little bit too easily and the movie has a shaky start, it really grew on me, and having Jimmy Stewart as a lead actor didn't hurt either. I think I had this confused with The Wrong Man in my mind, which I had seen a long time ago and disliked. I'm glad I finally gave it a chance!
