Congrats to Kirby

After my bracket got totally jacked up, I didn't pay too much attention to what was going on in the tournament. It was a pretty dramatic finish in our bracket as Kirby, in his first year of competition (I think), came out of nowhere to take the title by a large margin. Justin, me, Dave, and Hutch rounded out the top five. Congrats again, Kirby. We'll see if you can hold on to your title next year.

Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad

Happy: Greg and I got tickets to the Morrissey show at the Hollywood Bowl in June. I'm super stoked for that since I haven't had the chance to catch him live before.

Sad: The meeting went pretty badly yesterday. Apparently a woman on the board had a vendetta against me after I rubbed her the wrong way and saw to it I got removed from the post. My boss, who I'd never met before, really made me feel like crap. I told him if they reassign me that I didn't want to drive 40 miles to work anymore. The problem now is that the jobs close to home pay about 2 dollars less per hour. I'm going to talk to them again on Tuesday when I get home, but it looks like I'm back on the job hunt.

Happy: I'm leaving for San Francisco on Thursday morning! I can't freaking wait. It's been almost two years since I've seen my mom. It's also the first time we're all getting together as a family with Donnelly, my brother's girlfriend of almost two years. So that is cool. We're going to see Grindhouse on Friday and I can't wait for that either. So it should be an awesome weekend. Posting will most likely be at a minimum.

It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963)

I'm almost getting caught up with reviews - I used to be a month behind, and now it's only a week and a half! I've intended to watch this one for a long time, but the three-hour runtime always made me put it off.

If you're a fan of movies, and especially of comedies, and especially a fan of old comedians, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (henceforth known as simply "Mad World") should definitely be on your list. The goal for this movie was to feature every significant comedian of the day, either in regular roles, bit parts, or seconds-long cameos. Here's a list of the ones I recognize (there are tons more, which you can read about at this resourceful website about the movie): Spencer Tracy, Milton Berle, Phil Silvers, Ethel Merman, Jonathan Winters, Mickey Rooney, Buddy Hackett, Jimmy Durante, Peter Falk, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Buster Keaton, Carl Reiner, Don Knotts, Jerry Lewis, Jack Benny, and the Three Stooges. My favorite scene belongs to Jerry Lewis.

The story starts out simply - a gangster played by Durante gets into a car accident, and several people stop by the side of the road. Before he dies, he tells them that there's $350,000 under a W in Santa Rosita, and the people are soon in a race to get to the money before everyone else. Sound familiar? If you saw the atrocity that was Rat Race back in 2001, its inspiration was taken from Mad World - a fact my sister had to point out to me because Rat Race didn't even come close to achieving any comparable level of funny with the original.

At the beginning of Mad World, I laughed constantly. The situations the comedians end up going through are bizarre, varied, and highly exaggerated. As the plot progressed, my laughter lessened, and by the end, I was thinking, "Okay, that definitely went a bit to far." I think the first two hours are solid entertainment, and as the plot has to resolve itself and mush push toward a climactic end, it just gets ridiculous.

That being said, even in the weak moments, there are laughs, and even though the end is not as strong as the start, the movie is definitely worth watching and is an overall success. The star-power (not like the 90% B to C-Listers of Rat Race), the hilarious performances, the great stunt and set work, and music combined make it a must-see for any dedicated movie lover.
