Another Reason I Like House

Haha. When I was in high school, I totally sounded this out and played it for myself because I liked it so much (the first song they play). I lit up as soon as I heard the first string of notes. Whoever chooses the musical selections for this show is awesome!

The Glass Menagerie

A couple of weeks ago, Ric and I continued our support of the university theatre by going to see their rendition of The Glass Menagerie. Featuring a tiny cast of the theatre's usual actors, we were treated to a bit of humor and a bit of drama, and a stellar performance by the woman who played Amanda Wingfield.

I've never read any Tennessee Williams, but the character of Amanda is wonderful in its extroverted isolation, and the actress was completely successful at being both annoying and engaging. Her facial expressions were spot-on, and she almost got me tearful at her hopefulness in the moonlit scene on the fire escape. The rest of the cast was capable and effective, though the actor who played Jim was a tiny bit less so.

As for story, I'm not much of a play-reader, so I can't offer much to say. I think Ric and I agreed that we liked the story for the most part but found the symbolic Laura, blow out your candles scene a bit melodramatic. Actually, Ric has been pretty funny recently, because he'll randomly turn and say, "Blow out your candles, Laura, blow out your candles!" just to get a laugh out of me. Of course, I always laugh.

The set design was awesome, especially considering the incredibly tight budget the team had to work with. We were really impressed, especially when the director told us his nightmare story of painting a faux wood floor only to have an accident and have to start the whole thing over.

Always a fun time, and always worth the ticket price! I was glad to catch it.

Student Writing

Haha. Processing a departure card, I came across this example of student writing. My guess (or hope) is that this student wouldn't have been able to graduate anyway, had they been physically able to attend. The student writes the following as an explanation for leaving the university: "I was hitted by a car while acrossed the street. [The university] is TOO HARD for me to get there physically. Also, financial I'm unable to attend the program."

Really, it is sad that this person was in an accident, but, "hitted"?!
