WTF of the Day: The Following Bands are Gay

Love God's Way

Holy crap, this is funny and sad. This site is trying to help parents keep their kids from catching the gay (a term I have heard before, no joke) and music is the main culprit. They have a really amusing list of bands to avoid because they promote homosexuality. The misinformation is probably the most amusing. For instance, they have AIDS in parentheses next to The Grateful Dead. I don't know where they got that. And what's with (texan) next to George Michael? This is both amusing and just really, really stupid. I had to include the full list:

* The Spores (endorse suicide)
* Scissor Sisters
* Rufus Wainwright
* Merzbau
* Ravi Shankar
* Wilco
* Bjork (mb)
* Tech N9ne
* Ghostface Killah

* Bobby Conn
* Morton Subotnik

* Cole Porter
* The String Cheese Incident
* Eagles of Death Metal

* Polyphonic Spree
* The Faint
* Interpol
* Tegan and Sara
* Erasure
* The Grateful Dead (AIDS)
* Le Tigre
* Marilyn Manson (dark gay)
* The Gossip
* The Magnetic Fields
* The Doors
* Phish
* Queen

* The Strokes
* Sufjan Stevens
* Morrissey(?questionable?)

* The Pet Shop Boys

* Metallica

* Judas Priest
* The Village People
* The Secret Handshake
* The Rolling Stones
* David Bowie
* Frankie Goes to Hollywood
* Man or Astroman
* Richard Cheese
* Jay-Z
* Depeche Mode
* Kansas
* Ani DiFranco
* Fischerspooner

* John Mayer
* George Michael (texan)
* Angel Eyes
* The Indigo Girls
* Velvet Underground

* Madonna

7th Harry Potter Book Launches July 21st

Final 'Potter' launch on July 21 - CNN.com

Thanks to Les for the heads up on this one. The final installment in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, will hit stores on July 21st. The pre-order deals are already flying:

Many fans will pay much less for "Deathly Hallows," with Amazon.com quickly announcing the book would be sold for $18.89, a 46 percent discount. Price competition has been so intense over the years that many retailers have acknowledged they don't make money on the fantasy series, depending instead on customers buying other books along with Potter.

And it looks like someone at CNN screwed up on the article:

The fifth film, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," is scheduled to come out July 21, just eight days before the final book's release.

The movie is being released July 13th.

Mooninite Scare

Mooninite

When I heard yesterday that circuit boards bearing the images of characters from Aqua Teen Hunger Force were mistaken for bombs, I took it as a sign of paranoid overreaction on the part of the police. As I continued to read and hear reports, though, I was alarmed by comments like this:

"It is outrageous, in a post 9/11 world, that a company would use this type of marketing scheme. I am prepared to take any and all legal action against Turner Broadcasting and its affiliates for any and all expenses incurred during the response to today’s incidents."

Seriously? The police are so paranoid they see an advertisement as a bomb, and it's somehow the company's fault? If you read the whole news story linked to here, you'll see the language refers to the incident as a "hoax," as if the people who did this were trying to create a panic (as opposed to, say, promote their TV show).

As a result of this, there has now been an individual charged with the crime of placing "a hoax device that results in panic." This got me thinking about other absurdly harmless devices that would cause a panic. For example, what if someone set out a cardboard box bearing a sign in magic market that reads, "THIS IS NOT A BOMB"? Would everyone assume it's a bomb and go crazy? Probably.

Note: If you try this idea and get arrested, it's not my fault. But send me a picture.
