I found an open WiFi connection at our apartment, so I'm sitting on our couch in the dark sending this. Unfortunately I only have 56 minutes of battery time. Maybe I can recharge at a Starbucks or something. At least with no power I have been going to bed earlier.
We joined the Colorado chapter of Truman State a few weeks ago at a cost of $30 (per couple) and the membership lasts for the calendar year.
Last night the chapter had a dinner at a really nice downtown restaurant called Tastee Freeze. I had a 12 oz. filet mignon and Kelly had tequila key lime shrimp. Which reminds me, it wasn't Tastee Freeze, it was Sullivan's Steakhouse, but it was just as nice. We met a bunch of Truman alumni (a bunch = ~15). Dinner went on for close to 4 hours, but we had a surprisingly good time. Truman footed the bill for the whole shebang. Kelly and I estimate our meals together ran $80-$90. And, there must have been some cancellations because as a group we were still below the minimum dollar amount that Truman was spending, so we were forced to order wine and cocktails to up the dollaz. In the end, we still didn't meet the minimum so the Truman alumni representative put the leftover amount on two $50 giftcards and gave one to us and the other couple still there. Bam! Our $30 investment turned around for $140!
Ordering the cocktails reminded me of one of my pet peeves. When we left the restaurant after dinner, I checked with Kelly to see if I ordered a girly drink, and she said yes. Ouch. Usually, I stick to whiskey sours or Long Island iced teas, since I don't like beer and I don't really know any other drinks, and I especially don't know which ones are girly drinks. I run into the same problem at stores like the Gap, which is why I normally don't shop at them. All the clothes look similar that I don't know if I am looking at women's clothes or men's. Thus my suggestion to mall clothiers and bars is to carefully delineate between men's and women's products. That way I won't find myself sipping another Lemon Drop in my low riding, hip hugging, flare blue jeans.
So yesterday we moved into our new apartment. It wasn't freaking easy though. I had previously talked to the apartment manager about moving in on Friday, June 9th. I made sure to repeat the date about three times so we had everything clear. I was a little worried on Friday though because we had tried to call her the last couple days to ask if we could pay with multiple money orders and to verify the exact amount and she never responded. Sure enough, we got to the apartment on Friday and she was nowhere to be found. This was after Duncan had rented a truck and filled it up with his stuff. We found that the apartment was open so we decided to start unloading. Thankfully a resident gave us the number of the owner, who was able to come over and take our money and have us sign the lease. Of course, it was now too late to call Edison to turn on the power. So we don't have power until Tuesday, which is the earliest time they can come.
In spite of all of this, there is some good news. It turns out the manager of the apartments got another job and is moving out. So she's been at her new job instead of helping people like us move in. The owner asked Chris, my other roommate, if he would be interested in applying for manager. He would be paid a regular rate plus we would get the price of a two bedroom apartment deducted from our rent. Ching! So here's hoping that might work out. The people in our complex are really friendly and I love the apartment. Right now it feels like we're camping there, but it's all right. I'm still moving some stuff from Jon and Grace's and then we are going to head over to Ikea. So much for having a little time to relax and enjoy my new place on my Friday and Saturday off!
