Multiple domains

Sorry for all the posts about the blog and the upgrade, but here's one more that you may want to think about. It's now possible to have blogs on multiple domains. One installation of b2evolution can power blogs across several domains. In theory, we could each have our own domain name. So, instead of (or in addition to) going to brendoman.com/yourname, people could get to your site by going to www.yourdomain.com. I set up a test of this here:

http://www.personman.com/dev.php
http://www.brendoman.com/dev.php

That's the same blog. At the moment, all of the permalinks are set to use the personman.com url, but they can be set to work either way. There are some limitations. Cookies don't seem to work across domains, so if you're logged in and looking at the personman.com page, you won't see the links to the admin page and the edit links next to your posts. Non-logged in visitors won't see any difference.

If you're interested in this and that bug doesn't bother you and you're not too afraid of any other bugs that we don't know about, then contact me. This is pretty easy to set up and even easier to switch back if you don't like it. Domain names are cheap, too.

Image uploader works

The image uploader/file manager works. It creates a directory for each user.

Update:
Jeri, the image uploader works about the same as before.
1. Click on 'Upload' while you're writing a post.
2. A window pops up. Click 'Browse' to add your image, then click upload. There are some other fields, but they're optional.
3. Click Upload.
4. It shows some code to display the image in your post. Click 'Add the code to your post.'
5. Edit the code if you want to before posting. By default it puts the code in a box. If you don't like this, then edit the code, or tell me what you want it to look like and I'll edit your blog's stylesheet to change the way it looks.

The blog time is a central setting. I don't know of a way to let us all have different times. It's set on Central time right now. I'm all for rethinking that. I think we have bloggers in all four US time zones.

John Hodgman is everywhere

John Hodgman (left) in one of the new Mac ads
In November I saw a strange little man named John Hodgman go on the Daily Show to promote his new book: The Areas of My Expertise. The interview was so funny that I eventually bought the book (when Amazon finally had it in stock in March). I read it on our vacation and I thought it was very funny. There's also a blog promoting the book.

Hodgman has started making more appearances on the Daily Show, this time as their Resident Expert. His complete deadpan delivery gets me every time.

If I didn't like the guy enough already, this would have sealed the deal. He got involved with my favorite band, They Might Be Giants. Hodgman has appeared in their podcast, reading selections from his book. He also has a starring role in their new DVD, Venue Songs (available only at their concerts right now). He plays the part of the deranged millionaire who issued the challenge to the band to write a new song for each venue on a tour. You can watch some of the videos at tmbg.com.

Finally, there's a new series of TV ads for Apple Computer that star John Hodgman as the PC. Apple hasn't advertised their computers on television for a while, but I think these ads are fun. I'm glad to see that they're pushing for more of the computer market share. It really is a good time to switch to Mac if you're considering a new computer.

Upgrade all clear

I'm giving the all clear signal for the upgrade. With the exception of the file manager, everything seems to be working fine. If you have little problems you need fixed or new features (poll, comment spell check, etc) you want added to your blog, please comment here or email me.
