One Red Paperclip

I remember reading about this guy a while ago, but now he is really up to some good stuff. He started in July, 2005 with one red paperclip and an idea. He would trade this paperclip for something better, and keep doing so until he can get someone to give him a house. His site is One Red Paperclip. Right now, someone gave him one year of free rent in Phoenix in exchange for a contract to record music at a well known Canadian studio. On his site, you can see the progression of trades and even offer your own item up for trade.

To be fair, I happened upon this site via Digg.

Wait Until Dark

I am eternally blessed to work where I do. This place is filled with so many opportunities - free musical concerts, free fitness center, inexpensive plays and concerts, beautiful trees, and even wildlife that wander the campus. I love it.

Going to the plays here always reminds me that I need to remember to go to more university productions. They really are of wonderful quality and are so much more convenient to go to than driving in to L.A. This spring's play was Wait Until Dark. You might have seen or heard of the Audrey Hepburn movie; yes, it's that story.

A blind woman is visited by criminals masking themselves as an old friend of her husband and a cop. They're after a doll containing several ounces of heroin that came into her husband's possession without his realizing it, but her husband is away, and Suzy has to figure everything out on her own and save both her and her husband from getting hurt in the process.

This performance was just great. I like that the department went with a tension-filled play with some action-type sequences, and was able to find a way to make the theatre completely dark toward the end of the play for a very climactic ending. The actors were all very good, with the lead role of Suzy being absolutley captivating. She was perfect.

A good time was had by everyone in the theatre, especially the boss of my department, since the play was dedicated to his wife who lost almost all of her vision in the past few months. He was very deeply touched by the dedication, and talked nonstop about the play and the movie for the past month! Kudos to the father-in-law for making that call. :)

Cellular (2004)

Okay, so I wanted something to watch while I ate lunch. This movie was so ridiculous, I just HAD to see how it ended. Apparently Cellular functions solely as a way to make a paycheck for a lot of good actors who should all know how to identify a quality script by now. Kim Basginer, William H. Macy, Jason Statham, Noah Emmerich, and even the dude from Desperate Housewives are all completely wasted here. Somehow, Basinger actually does a fairly believable job of how freaked out a woman would be by kidnappers, but when she jabs some guy in a special vein that she somehow remembered and referenced from 10th grade biology, all I could do was laugh.

This movie is full of instances where you know the events occuring are impossible (getting parking practically ON the Santa Monica Pier, which is inhabited only by beautiful girls in bikinis, for example. You're either rolling your eyes or verbally scoffing at it while watching. Nevertheless, it does move rather quickly and does kill time effectively enough. I guess that would be a "Meh, it's hilariously flawed but doesn't make me hate it."

the story of your gypsy uncle.: Christians can be punk rock, too. (or not)

I'm stealing this from Lindsay because it's so dang funny I thought I would share it. Lindsay books several different bands for a label and she recieved this list of demands from a venue requesting one of her bands to play. Mind you, the band they requested weren't even Christians. To me the funniest demand was asking the band to bring mics and stands. That's just ridiculous. So is asking a band to buy food from you. But the rest are rather amusing too.

Must be Christian music!
-you are expected to have some kind of ministry, whatever you are comfortable with, we are expecting you to open with prayer
- we can provide pa system, but you must provide mics, cords, stands

-We are open Tues. thru Saturday, we have country, gospel, bluegrass, some acoustic on Thurs., heavy rock on Fri and all kinds on sat. We predominately book 2 bands a night

-Featured bands share full love offering taken up for them. All bands are expected to partner in the advertising and bring customers with them. Let their friends know about the show.

-Opening acts are usually solo or duets , they are not at this time compensated, they are expected to stay for the whole show, it's polite

-all artist can sell their merchandise, space and a table will be provided

-show start at 7:30 PM on weekdays, 8 on Saturday and, load-in is between 6-6:30 PM

- the MustardSeed will advertise in 5 different location around Columbus, Ohio, band should consider some supporting ads

-please bring a picture or poster to hang on the wall of your band, with your contact info

-please do not bring food in from the outside, we will provide some coffee and water, we have food for sale .

- If you need to cancel 2 weeks notice is required! It is the way Christians would act

If you made these kind of demands in Orange County, your venue wouldn't last very long. But being in the midwest sort of helps.
