Brendan and I recorded a little podcast last night via Skype. It's pretty nerdy, so don't say I didn't warn you.

The Great Escape (1963)

Apparently it took me way too long to finally see this movie, because everyone who saw me watching it on Saturday said, "You've NEVER seen this movie?!?" Those comments were all followed by family members sharing spoilers that kind of ruined the suspense of the film, but I decided to keep on hoping that all 250 men would miraculously escape from the same WWII prison camp. Heh. Yeah.

I really really liked this one because of the varied characters, the creative escape ideas, and the lasting sense of determination, hope, and the duty to escape. One interesting thing to me was that the men in charge of the prison camp weren't hateful of their prisoners; they didn't approve of Hitler's actions and were simply hoping to ride out the war peacefully, far from any of the action. I enjoy war movies that give the opposing side a realistic personality rather than making them 100% evil or wrong. That's actually something I liked in The Bridge on the River Kwai as well.

I really started to get attached to some of the characters in this story (particularly the forger), and by the end I was very caught up in what would happen to them. I pretty much enjoyed everything about it, from acting to scenery to script to casting. I'm glad I finally watched it!

Next up is a venture into a newer genre for me, starting with a Fistful of Dollars and The Dirty Dozen. Should be interesting.

Kasabian at the Henry Fonda (Music Box)

I have definitely joined the Kasabian bandwagon lately. The album has a great mood, the beats are good for dancing, the band Oasis-esque in being proud of themselves, and their logo is awesome.

I saw the band play live at a sold-out show on Tuesday night at the Henry Fonda theatre, now called the Music Box (yet another stupid name change of a venue), and they were incredibly infectious. They had a great lighting setup, which went very well with the music, and I had a really good time. Now I want to catch them at the Galaxy in Anaheim (similar to the San Juan Capistrano Coach House, I've heard) on Saturday, but I don't have anyone to go with so I probably won't go.

At any rate, if in the past you have enjoyed the Charlatans or the Stone Roses, you'll probably enjoy the feel of Kasabian's music. Great show.

Cole is Back!

Our first hostee to desert brendoman.com, Cole, has returned to the flock along with his friend Ben to present their own podcast. It's pretty darn good and funny to boot. Check it out.

Podcast Delay

Danny and I recorded a podcast on Skype tonight and it is all set to go. The only problem is that I had to change the radiobrendoman.com domain so that it wasn't pointing here anymore. So it might take awhile. Once that happens the podcast will be back in action. Hooray!
