Deep Throat Revealed

Washington Post Confirms Felt Was 'Deep Throat'

The Washington Post today confirmed that W. Mark Felt, a former number-two official at the FBI, was "Deep Throat," the secretive source who provided information that helped unravel the Watergate scandal in the early 1970s and contributed to the resignation of president Richard M. Nixon.

Graduation and the Weekend

Yes, it's that time of year again.

I couldn't post on Friday, so I'll give you the quote of that day today, said from a student who just got a UW for the most important class of the program, "So are you saying I'm not going to be able to walk?"

Well, after a 2 hour adult programs lunch in the blistering sun (I now have a nice farmer's tan and bright pink cheeks) with our graduating campus safety officer Peters, graduation finally came, and we had the pleasure of sitting with Mr. and Mrs. Mann. No one could hear poor Ogilvie because everyone was talking, so I read my newly-purchased-from-Agadoni hardback, illustrated "Chronicles of Narnia" until it was time to cheer the two people I was there to see.

Since I was once a secretary, when the department I "secretaried" for had its procession, I had a comment to make about each student, whether they were nice, turned in everything late, were snobbish, were pregnant, or had difficult-to-deal-with spouses. It kept me amused while I waited for my friends to graduate. As soon as their names were called, Ric and I hightailed it out of there to avoid traffic, and went to Bobby McGees for Cyndi's fabulous party feast.

The woman decorates her own graduation party! Well, we ate until we were ready to pop, and the cake and ice cream tasted like someone had managed to inject sugar into sugar, which left us practically dizzy with a high. We got to catch up a bit with the Askews and the Hutchinseses, which was cool. I hadn't seen many of them in a looooong time, so it was great to see everyone.

Saturday we didn't do much since Ric had a stiff back from his car having been rear-ended that afternoon. It was sad to see our roles reversed, with him barely able to move while I comforted him. I also watched Something Wicked This Way Comes, which I will post about later for you, Jonathan. Don't buy it.

Sunday after church, I went to see Layer Cake (review tomorrow) and that night we went out to Heroes in Fullerton for the first time in ages and got giant drinks, then walked it off in downtown until we were able to drive home. It's been so long since we've done something like that. Very fun.

Monday my goal was to read 250 pages of my Jordan book, Fires of Heaven. I'm not sure if the titles of these books actually relate to much of the plot. Just nice generic names that sound cool. I only got about 170 read, since Ric's parents were feeding us for the holiday, so we ate dinner by the pool and enjoyed their company. That was worth the break. I managed to squeeze 20 pages this morning and 20 pages at lunch. I've got about 45 until I'm done, which I'll be glad for since it's been with me for at least a month (about a thousand pages) and I need to finish so I can read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. After that, I'll go back to the Wheel of Time series until at least October, when I'll pick up Narnia again. Lately my life is a series of changing books according to what movies are coming out. I practically have a syllabus!

All in all, a weekend that had equal parts fun and relaxation. Exactly what I needed.

This week I only have to work 3 days; we had Monday off, and short Fridays start this week, with Friday being an all staff training 1/2-day that requires no work. It will be interesting to see how the university goes about giving a seminar on sexual harassment, especially since I tend to think a certain someone who will probably be leading some of the seminar displays sexism in his emails (he sends emails with half the email addressed to men and half to women, making jokes accordingly).

On the Job Front

I have two interviews this week. Tomorrow I am interviewing at a placement agency in Orange. Hopefully I will get something so I can get a place up there and start saving up for a car and stuff while I look for a permanent job. Friday I'm interviewing at a small church in Cypress. It sounds pretty promising but I'm not getting my hopes up, especially after what happened last week.

In other news, I'm really digging my new compy. It plays Half-Life 2 insanely well even in 1024x768 resolution. Everything is fast. I'm definitely an AMD man now.

So it looks like I'll have a pretty busy week. I'll be up in O.C. tomorrow and Friday so if anyone wants to grab a meal or just hang out, let me know.

Gunbound World Champion

http://www.softnyx.net/

This is the "major" update to the game that Softnyx has been promising. I played the Korean version briefly, not enough to really see the changes, except for the new bots. Anyway, there's a system in place where you don't actually buy avatars, but rather you rent them. Stupid. There's other changes (you get kicked from a room after 20 seconds if you don't click "Ready!", high angling = more damage, and others).

If you're interested in downloading it, wait. Everyone and their mother is getting it now (today is the first day it's available). The mirrors are all down, and on the off chance that the main site has it, you'll likely be downloading it slowly. Very slowly.

Once I get it and play it for a while, I'll report on whether or not it's worth it.

So I Have Been Home For A Couple Days Now

And I can barely remember the trip home. All I really know is that my truck killed eleventy billion bugs and my belief that all birds are suicidal, is strengthend.

Currently I am looking for a job. I need to get one, so I can move out of the house and live on my own. I need one that will give me 40 hours a week, and will pay me about $8 an hour starting. I think that is what I will need in order to support me.

So really I need to find a job quick, and make it a good one.

Anyways, my little sister is really mean, and I need to find a way to make her stop being mean, cause I have been home very little and I am tired of it.

Real life liger

Drawing of a ligerReal-life ligerReal life liger - I don't think he has magical powers, but this cross between a lion and a tiger is huge. From the article: "He is three years old, stands 10 feet tall on his hind legs, and weighs about 1,000 lbs. (At maturity he is expected to reach 12 feet in length and weight about 1,250 lbs.)"

This is pretty much my favorite animal.

HDTV is Purdy

My friend Mike had a ton of discounts at Best Buy so we went shopping yesterday for the latest tech gadget we could find. Mike has always been on the cutting edge of things. He was the first person I knew that had a CD burner, a DVD player, DSS, Tivo, and tons of other stuff. He's had a huge Mitsubishi widescreen HDTV set sitting in his living room for quite some time. Now that DirecTV has announced that they will be offering local channels in L.A. in HD by the end of the year Mike decided it was time to get an HD receiver. He went with the HD DVR box. It's got a 250 GB Tivo in it which can record 30 hours of HD programming and 200 hours of standard programming. Yeah, holy crap. Right now we only get 5 HD channels on DirecTV, but they are the sweetest looking things I've ever seen. Everything is in true widescreen and it looks crystal clear. It makes watching golf a beautiful experience. I'm excited for football season now because Mike will be getting Sunday Ticket HD. Speaking of sports, ESPN HD is pretty darn sweet. Right now my favorite though is Discover HD Theater. Those nature shows look absolutely gorgeous. I'm definitely looking forward to when every channel is in HD and the equipment gets cheaper so I will be able to enjoy this stuff in the comfort of my own home. Until then, I'll just be bumming it a lot at Mike's.

What are you anal about?

I am on the whole a non-anal guy. However, there are certain things that I am very anal about.

For instance, I am very anal about pens. I cannot stand writing with a crappy pen. I think it is because my penmanship quality decreases directly proportional to the quality of the pen I am using. I have to use a uniball .5 pen, or I go out and buy one to use.

Another small thing that drives me up the wall is eating corn on the cob. The eating has to be done systematically in order to ensure that I get the absolute most corn I can off the cob. This stems from loving corn on the cob as a child and having a large family all trying to eat the corn on the cob, which was in limited supply. It befuddles me to watch someone eat a bit here, a bit there... I must eat mine like a typewriter.

Any of you guys have weird little anal behaviors.

stupid drivers

According to this story, the Northeast has the dumbest drivers. When I first saw the headline, I thought, "is it possible for anywhere to have worse drivers than CA (in the U.S.)?" Apparently it is, but don't get too excited. Only Maryland, D.C., New York, New Jersey, Massachussetts, and Rhode Island are worse. That still puts us in 43rd place of the areas that were tested. And I experience proof of this on a regular basis.

Holy Handkerchiefs and stealing from the poor

Erika and I were laughing the other day at a mailing we got from an organization called Saint Matthew's Churches, that contains a "Bible Faith Handkerchief" that has the power to bring miracles and blessings to our house. According to the accompanying letter, we are supposed to write our name and a prayer concern on the handkerchief (it's actually a regular piece of paper with a plaid border). We are then to place the handkerchief in our Bible (turned to Acts 19:11-12--more on that later) for JUST ONE NIGHT (why not longer, I don't know). We are then told to send the letter back to the church so that they can pray for us.

The basis for this whole ministry, apparently, is the aforementioned Acts 19:11-12, which says, "God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them." The person writing the letter claims that this verse is a command for "ministers to send Bible faith handkerchiefs to people's homes." That's quite a stretch.

Smoke and mirrors from Sony and MS

Smoke, mirrors and the next generation of video games - May. 26, 2005

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) There was a lot of hype last week about the next generation of game machines. Microsoft said the Xbox 360 will ultimately reach 1 billion consumers worldwide, while Sony gave a laundry list of features for the PlayStation 3, showing some jaw dropping footage along the way.

(Nintendo promised a Revolution, but didn't go much further than that.)

I hate to be a wet blanket, but it's time to come back to reality.

Good article about the broken promises of the last generation of consoles. Don't expect the Xbox 360 and the PS3 to live up to the hype.

New System

Mike and I put together my new PC yesterday. Fry's always has killer deals and we took full advantage of them. We got an AMD 64 2800 processor with motherboard for $139, and 80 GB HD for $30, a G-Force 4 128 MB AGP card for $40, and a case for $35. Mike hooked me up with 512 MB of DDR RAM he had and a monitor and I had a new compy. It's nice having a totally fresh PC. Since we were able to save my hard drive from my laptop and put it in an enclosure I didn't lose my music or files. So now I'm able to hunt for jobs full time. Fun.

I have seen the future, and it is surgery!

My goal yesterday: Take mom and grandma to airport at 11:30 for a trip to Kansas, then spend the rest of the day reading and napping. Half-day vacation!

Yesterday's actual timeline:

8am: work
11:15am: leave work to pick up mom and grandma at parents' house, switch cars
11:30am: drive to LAX in mom's car
11:45am: mom mentions stomach ache
12:15pm: drop off mom and grandma and drive back to La Mirada
1:00pm: pick up aromatic shrimp from China cottage and plan uneventful afternoon
1:30pm: drop off mom's car, switch around mom and dad's cars in driveway, drive home
1:45pm: an appointment with aromatic shrimp and TiVo. ohhhhhyeah!
2:30pm: start getting sleepy from good Chinese food. ric comes home, must stay awake for a bit to keep company
3:30pm: start falling asleep
4:00pm: phone call from mom: "I'm not on the plane, I'm in the ER! I started shaking and sweating from my stomach ache and the LAX paramedics took me to a hospital in Marina del Rey. I may need you to pick me up if the tests come back bad."
4:45pm: start falling asleep again - back ache
5:00pm: woke up with call from Ric about funny liberal talk radio station
5:15pm: start falling asleep
5:30pm: call from grandma: "She has gallstones. Can you come pick us up?"
5:45pm: go get mom's car, break news to dad in hopes that he won't have an old man worrying fit, and drive to Marina del Rey ER
6:30pm: pick up mom and grandma at ER and drive to LAX
7:00pm: wait and wait for a Midwest airlines rep to help find mom's luggage.
7:30pm: still waiting. the desk is closed and someone's supervisor is taking a long time!
8:00pm: someone finally helps. retrieve luggage
8:15pm: drive back home. mom throws up in a ziplock sandwich bag in the car while 1812 overture plays.
8:30pm: (I sing 1812 theme with vomit noises replacing the percussion, which surprisingly my grandma laughs at)
8:45pm: drop off mom and her luggage at her house
9:00pm: take grandma to dairy for milk since she dumped it all down the drain in the morning
9:15pm: drop off grandma and her luggage at her house
9:30pm: arrive at parents' house and switch cars
9:45pm: several hours later, arrive at home (which is why i didn't come over, wendy)

Today my mom gets to cancel all trip plans and see her doctor to figure out when she'll have surgery. I'm hoping to be able to get that nap sometime on Saturday, since today and tomorrow are packed. Mom's handling it like a pro. Some vacation day we had yesterday!

Terrorism planning made easy

Nuclear Weapon Effects Calculator

This interactive tool illustrates the devastating effects of a nuclear weapon detonation in selected U.S. cities. The size of the weapon and the height at which it is detonated are the two main factors which affect the range of destruction.

If you're planning to detonate a nuclear weapon in a major US city, then this tool will help you get it right. Just select the city and delivery method, click on the spot you want to detonate at, choose the power of the nuke and the satellite map will show you how big the blast will be. I suppose this site could also be used to prepare for an attack and/or help frighten people.

New skin: reflection

There's a new choice for skinning your brendoman.com blog now. I've added a skin called Reflection. Check it out. I saw the template on Open Source Web Design, then I contacted the designer and got permission to port it over to b2evolution. It's supposed to do well at various resolutions and text sizes. It's not hard to change the highlight color from yellow to something else, or to swap in your own image at the top. Let me know what you think. Once I get it where I want it, I'm going to submit it to the b2evolution skin repository. So far most of us here are using different skins, which is cool. I'm not planning on using this on my site, so if someone wants it, they're welcome to start using it. I can help you customize it if you want.

Plain View #9

Plain View #9 5/18/05

http://feeds.feedburner.com/searscast

This week's show is almost a week late in getting posted. This is due to a very busy week, and to be honest, not a lot of motivation to get this one up. To put a positive spin on it, I would say this is the most honest and gritty Plain View yet. In other words, we were tired and incoherent through out most of the show. We event went so far as to cut 7 minutes of political ramblings from the first part of the show. At any rate, in the future we will try harder to prepare for our shows.

The Birth of a Nation (1915)

Although DW Griffith's film was originally called The Clansmen when it first screened in the states, and although it's very sympathetic to the confederate cause, and although it definitely shows an appreciation for a certain white-hooded organization, I think that's not fully what makes Birth of a Nation a good movie.

First of all, the scope of this story is all over the place. It begins pre-Civil War, introducing us to Northern and Southern families, continues to the war full of battle scenes and raided homes, replicates the surrender of the South, moves on to Lincoln's freeing of the slaves and also his assassination, and on to an insurgence of power that the white southerners react to by forming the clan and saving the day. It's got love, it's got battle, it's got replicated moments in history, it's got costumes, it's got sets. And they're all good.

Second, this movie has heart. It's not just a slanted reproduction of historical events. It follows both the Northern and Southern families through their trials caused by the war. Some grow poor, some grow powerful, some find love, and some die. This was a really ambitious movie.

The only thing I could think of when it was all over was what a director like Griffith would be able to accomplish in today's film industry. If he was able to do as much as he did in BOAN in 1915, imagine what he could do in the 21st century with millions of dollars!

Although the runtime is about three hours and ten minutes of silent film, it was worth the time for me. I say that now that I'm finished, but it probably took me a few installments to finish the whole thing, just to warn you.

Bummer

I haven't really been in the blogging mood lately. I had a killer job interview in Orange on Sunday that I thought I nailed. The kids and parents at the church really responded well and it was obvious that I was the pastor's choice for the job. Unfortunately, the final decision wasn't up to her and the kids and parents decided that I was too outreach oriented and my ideas were a little too big for them. Basically they didn't want to grow out of their comfort zone and they wound up hiring the safe man who won't challenge them. Bummer. So I'm scrambling for a job since I need some sort of cash flow. I won't even tell you some of the places I applied at yesterday. I really had to suck in the last couple ounces of pride I had left. I also applied at a bunch of churches, some of them out of state. So we'll see what happens. My future is still kind of a giant question mark right now and I'm trying to deal with that the best that I can.

slowly but surely

We finally got our bedside tables that match our bedframe and dresser! It really does take a long time to settle in when you get married. We've been making little improvements to the place as we go, but it still feels like there's so much to do. We keep making lists and then putting things off because it all costs money, and we'd rather invest for the future than spend like crazy on furniture and accessories. So at least the bedroom is pretty much complete. I think eventually we might buy a couple more things from the bedroom collection we've been putting together, but none of them are all that necessary for the time being.

Our goal right now is to do what we can to make the apartment feel less cluttered. Having a piano really makes a difference in a room - it makes arranging the room a lot more difficult since it takes up a pretty big amount of space. With that, two couches, two bookcases, two end tables, and an entertainment center all in one room, it feels a little bit packed. We're trying to think of better ways to streamline and organize. Plus, it's about time we put some pictures up on the walls! We'll have to find some nice art. At least our wedding album is in and our enlarged prints will be ready soon. Some of those on the walls might actually make it look like someone lives in the apartment. ;)

By the way, we got our album and it's beautiful. If there's anyone out there who isn't married yet, I highly recommend Ira for wedding photography. Don't let his prices scare you - he's worth every penny!

That is a whole heap of Ugly on a stick.

Ugliest Basketball Players

Funny Stuff. Here is what they had to say about Pollard:

It's appropriate that an All-Ugly Honorable Mention was Shaq's favorite whipping boy. Shaq considers himself pretty. He was just sick with seeing Pollard come out with a different hairstyle every day and nailpolish and samurai beards and trying to front him with his weak game. So Shaq had to dunk on his ass and launch him into the photographers out of habit. And get the call, too.

What they had to say about a certain Knick's center was better though:

Ewing's jaw... there hasn't been one of its like in the human race in 60- shoot, 70,000 years. If Ewing was to pass on, and you got a hold of his skeletal jaw and buried it in the Olduvai Gorge, the archeologist who dug it up might announce that he had found a speciman that was almost certainly Homo Erectus, though remarkably well-preserved. Ewing doesn't clean up well, either. He looks worse in a suit than in a uniform. Bad part is he wore the suit for most of his career, as he watched one ringless season after another pile up. Good. He and his team destroyed pro basketball in the '90s. The Knicks weren't good enough to beat anyone fair and square, so they just played rough.

Kevin Rose dumps G4, launches online show

This is a move that is making geeks everywhere happy. Kevin Rose was one of the last TechTV personalities left on G4TV. He was unhappy with the way his friends got fired and the way he wasn't allowed to do as much tech content as he wanted on the dumbed down incarnation of The Screen Savers. He also happened to be locked into a four year contract, so he couldn't quit. But, after a month of negotiations, he was released from his contract, and he's moving on. I see this as one more nail in the coffin for G4. They've already lost most of their good talent, cancelled or ruined the good shows they brought over and, what's most telling, they've exchanged all the relevant and profitable tech company ads for exercise equipment ads and infomercials like you see on PAX late at night. I'm hoping they'll close up shop soon.

On the upside, Kevin Rose has some good projects underway. Last night his downloadable tech show, Systm launched. I watched it this morning and it was really fun. It reminded me of some of the best segments from TSS. Now that he's doing this full time, it should be high quality and frequently released. If you like tech at all, this is worth a download. Rose has another project I like quite a bit: Digg.com. And the whole TSS team gets together once a week to record This Week in Tech, a 60 minute podcast of technology news and discussion.

The Great Debate

The first time I read “The Three Minute Abortion Debate” it was a little uncomfortable because at one time I was the insufferable liberal. And yes, I did sound that stupid when arguing about abortion with someone. You can’t really blame me. There is no logical conclusion to the pro abortion argument. That’s why “pro choicers” end up dancing around the subject by bringing up how “pro lifers” care more about unborn kids than born ones and how “pro lifers” are such hypocrites. These things may or may not be true, but they are simply diversions from the real issue -- why is it OK to kill a baby?

Let me offer some examples of the brilliantly illogical things you hear from pro abortionists:

“It’s just a clump of cells”

So are you, can I kill you?

“What about all the poor women who will die as a result of unsafe and unclean back alley abortions?”

What about all the poor boys and girls who die as a result of “safe and clean” abortions and end up in back alley trash cans every day? At least if a woman has an illegal back alley abortion, that’s her choice. The boys and girls have no choice in the matter. I thought you liked choice! Unfortunately, the choice to kill someone who’s existence we find annoying isn’t one of the freedoms we have in this country.

“It is possible that a fetus is unable to perceive pain at any time during pregnancy.”

Can I drug you until you’re unable to feel any pain and then kill you? Why not? It’s probably painless.

“Children who are unplanned are more likely to be abused, and children born unwanted face increased risks of poor health, poverty and neglect.”

I have one word for you – adoption! If you don’t want the kid – for goodness sake, give it to someone who is dying to have one. As Bruce Bethke said, there is no such thing as an unwanted child in America today. There are people waiting in line for years to adopt. And it’s amazing how many are willing to take drug addicted babies, babies with major health problems and babies of any race. Most adoptive parents are willing to pay all the medical expenses incurred by the birthmother and many will compensate for wages missed while carrying the child.

But, let’s say adoption wasn’t an option. Is death really a better fate than possible abuse, poor health, poverty and neglect? If so, let’s round up all the abused, sick, poor, and neglected kids today and put them out of their misery. We can give them drugs so it will be painless!

I’m sure I’ll think of more ridiculous abortion utterances, and maybe I’ll add them when I do. If I’ve insulted you, I’m truly sorry because I can totally relate to your groundless sense of righteous indignation. But maybe I’ve made a dent in the indoctrination you’ve suffered. It took people like me to finally pull my insufferable self out of the fog, and I’m glad to provide that same service for others.
