I am so bored

I am so bored right now. I have absolutely nothing to do. I mean nothing to do with people. If someone were to walk in my room right now with something to do, then I would do it. I think I would just about do anything right now with anyone for any reason what so ever. Maybe that is my problem is that I am sitting around waiting for stuff to happen instead of making stuff happen. I just can't seem to make stuff happen on my own. Oh well. It really stinks.

So, if anyone is doing anything tonight, leave your name and phone number, and I will call you, more than likely.

Ready.gov visual aids

Ready.gov is a little Department of Homeland Security website that they whipped up to both prepare you for surviving an attack and scare the crap out of you. But they uses pictures throughout the page that can be much more fun if you add some captions.

poulenc@noon

I went to the Wednesday noon performance today. The piece was a sextet for piano, flute, oboe, clairnet, bassoon, and horn. It was by Fancis Poulenc, of whom I had never heard before today. I actually enjoyed it. For something written in a more fragmented style, Poulenc's piece maintained a sense of melodic tone and the piece moved logically, though playfully, through its story. Very nice. I might have to check him out further in the future.

Kevin Smith raves about Revenge of the Sith

Kevin Smith's review of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith is up at Ain't it Cool dot com. I only read the first few sentences because it contains spoilers, but apparently he really loves it. He says

- "Revenge of the Sith" is, quite simply, f---ing awesome. This is the "Star Wars" prequel the haters have been bitching for since "Menace" came out, and if they don't cop to that when they finally see it, they're lying.

I would like to remind Brendoman that he sat in a chair in my living room last summer and vowed that he would not pay money to see this movie. So I guess he's either breaking his vow, or sneaking into a theater.

Estate tax

Mortimer B. Zuckerman, the usually conservative editor-in-chief of US News and World Report, had an editorial this week about the estate tax. In the 2000 campaign Bush talked a lot about getting rid of this "death tax" which he claimed would put family farms and small businesses under. The funny thing is, that's not how it works. The first S1.5 million of an estate is exempted, and there are no examples of what Bush described ever happening. Bush and the Republican Congress began reducing the estate tax in the 2001 budget, and the House has a motion to repeal the tax altogether. This will cost close to a trillion dollars over ten years. Democrats have proposed a compromise that raises the exemption amount to $3.5 M per person. That sound more reasonable that repealing the tax. The article has more numbers and some good background on the issue.

10-second reviews

As a pleasant surprise, I found out Bauhaus are playing at the Glass House tomorrow. Cheap tickets, small venue, big band with big performance. Awesome.

Lately I've actually been checking out a lot more music. Giving bands a try since I always hear so much about them. Anyway. Not that all of these reviews are for NEW CDs, but at least they're relatively newER (within past couple of years):

beckguero.jpg
Beck's "Guero"
One of my more pleasant purchases, Beck is just.. fun. I've had a good time driving to this one.

mobyhotel.jpg
Moby's "Hotel"
I think I almost always like Moby albums. This one has a nice little cover of New Order's Temptation.

museabsolution.jpg
Muse's "Absolution"
Neither to be critically acclaimed nor coimpletely despised. A few of the songs are really good. Some are okay. I doubt I'll become a huge fan.

shinsohinvertedworld.jpg
The Shins' "Oh, Inverted World"
Only one other song is like the one on the Garden State soundtrack, which is why I bought it. I'm still deciding what I think, but it's not a life-changer.

snowpatrolfinalstraw.jpg
Snow Patrol's "Final Straw"
I'm not sure if I even finished the album. Not my thing, and I'm not sure what the hubub is about.

U2htdaab.jpg
U2's "How to Dismantle..."
Meh. Maybe I should give it another try, but so far I'm not very impressed.

Digg.com front page

It took me three tries, but I got a story onto the digg.com front page. I guess it's ironic that it would be a story about Linux when I'm about to switch to a Mac. But I don't think I'm really giving up on Linux. I'm still going to use it for my server, I'm still going to use the Linux-like stuff about the Mac OS, and I'll continue to test Linux distros. But some of the little annoyances about Linux are starting to wear on me. I think Ubuntu has just about reached the point that a basic user can install it and be good to go. But I'm not a basic user. I want to edit video, attach my digital camera, etc, and the Mac will make that easier.

Choosing a Mac

I guess I'm getting a little more serious about this now. Brendon, having made this switch recently, has some ideas for me. I'm thinking that my money might be better spent at a Mac store for a new Mac than on eBay for last year's model. A new Mac would get me more power, a better warranty, more choice in what I get, and the newest version of OS X. Now I've narrowed it down to three Macs:

  1. A Mac Mini as souped up as I can get it
  2. A mid-range G5 iMac
  3. The cheapest G5 PowerMac

I'm still open to ideas, especially from anyone who has made the switch or is familiar with Macs.

New Sufjan Stevens album leaked!

I posted about him on my blog back in January (SHAZAM), and it was brought to my attention that his new album, Illinois, which is supposed to be released July 5, was leaked to the internet. I went on a mad dash looking for a place to download it... DC++, sites, BitTorrent and I finally found a torrent for it.

The verdict?

Brilliant. I've stopped doing my very important schoolwork (400 pages of reading + notes, due tomorrow... LOL) so I can absorb this beautiful album. I don't think this man can possibly let me down.

If you want to listen to it... You can email me at negligent[at]gmail[dot]com. >_>

You shoot targets and it keeps score and then at the end of the ride you can e-mail your picture to yourself or friends. Phil totally kicked my butt, but it was tons of fun. Things are going great here and I seriously think this is where I'll end up. Hope things are going well on your guys' end.

sadder update

Well, the prodigal son came home for a while, but has gone out to feed with the swine again. That's right. Anthony.

I had just gotten to the point where I could hang out with him again, after he had missed our wedding due to getting high and had a good scare with the law that shook him up into going straight.

It took me a while to let him back in. At first I'd let Ric hang out with him and I'd do something else. Little by little I got comfortable with him and was even starting to hang out every once in a while. And now this. At least this time around I don't feel too hurt because we didn't have enough time to get really close before he slipped. But my main thing is wondering how to treat him. We told him we couldn't watch him destroy himself anymore when he first started coming around again. But obviously a listening ear, encouragement, and advice doesn't work when someone is addicted.

He says he's trying to get back off again. I think the only thing that could help would be a professional program, which I don't think he has done so far. Any advice, Kristen?

catching up with the past seven months

We had the pleasure of going out with recently returned Colin and his fiancee on Saturday. I can't believe the last time we saw him was last October! We went to Chomp in Fullerton. What a meat market for 30-somethings! The place was packed and loud. But we had a great time.

Colin had a million pictures and stories, and after dinner he even brought a memory stick full of movies over to our place. It was good to see him safe, sound, and sane, and great to see the couple reunited. :)

We got to learn all sorts of stuff about Iraq that doesn't get covered in the news. We also got to learn all about the medical aspect of things (i.e. gross stuff), since Colin got to deal with a lot of that stuff. I'm proud of his work and dedication.

We're definitely looking forward to the wedding this July!

Choosing an OS, part II

I still haven't really come to terms with the idea of buying a computer. At the moment the thing that looks like the best balance of all my needs is a G4 Powermac. They can be had on eBay for just under $1000. I already have a monitor, so that's no problem. I don't need a pretty iMac and I don't really need a laptop. These things are oozing with power. Look at this one and this one. I could do some serious multimedia crap with that. And since OS X is built on BSD then I would still have my command line and I could still install some open souce apps. If I get lucky on eBay I could get a computer that already has some good stuff installed (think Photoshop, Final Cut, etc.) If I do go with a Mac, then I'll actually end up with one of each. I'll have my XP laptop at work, my Mac desktop/media machine and my Linux server.

I don't think I'll be buying anything until I'm sure that I need my current computer to become a dedicated server. So, I have to get some web design jobs. If this Mac idea is stupid then I need some friends to talk me out of it ASAP.

Strange phenomenonem...menon

Why is it that when you need to study, cleaning the apartment suddenly becomes the most important and fun task that you can think of? In fact, the bigger the test, the more the thought of windex and the Hoover appeal to me. Until today, though, I had no idea this phenomenon worked in reverse. My parents are coming to visit in 3 days. Our apartment is in the state that my bedroom used to get when my mom would just close the door slowly instead of wasting time and energy trying to get me to clean it. (**note: We are not always such slobs...school and work have just consumed our lives at the moment...against our will, mind you) I am supposed to be spending all day today cleaning the apartment in preparation for my parents' arrival, but at the moment, all I can think of is working on my capstone research project or graduation portfolio. ~Kelly

Choosing an OS

I'm planning on hosting some websites on the server running in my back room at home. If I do that, then I'm going to have to stop using it as my desktop workstation. That means that I'm in the market for a new computer. At the moment I'm really torn about what operating system I want on my new computer. I've been using Linux at home for a few months now, but a Mac would be nice for doing more multimedia. And there's always Windows, too. So, I'm going to do some thinking out loud (er . . . in writing) and I would love to hear what you think.

The first question that needs to be asked: What am I going to do with my new computer?

  • Regular websurfing
  • Web design
  • Digital photography and a little graphic design
  • Maybe some gaming
  • Audio production
  • Video editing (maybe)

Here are the factors that are going to come into play: Cost, hardware compatibility, available software, ease of use and security.

Cost
Linux is the clear winner here. The OS itself is free (Ubuntu is my distro of choice) and almost all the applications you can get for Linux are free. Windows would come in second. The OS comes bundled with a new computer, but it does add something to the cost. There are some free apps for Windows, but commercial programs are the norm. Apple is the worst in terms of cost. You can only get the OS by buying a computer from Apple, and they are notoriously expensive. Mac OS X does come with iLife, a very cool suite of software. Windows and Mac OS charge money for upgrades, so there's more than just the one-time cost to consider. If I pay $200 for Windows XP today, will I be paying another $150 for Longhorn next year? Like I said, Linux wins this round.

Hardware
Windows, which works with just about anything, would have to be the winner here. If I shopped carefully I could build a computer that works fine under Linux. The printer would be the tough part. I have two printers at my house now, and neither of them has drivers for Linux. A Mac requires Apple hardware.

Available Software
This is a tough one. It really needs to be broken down into some sub-categories: multimedia, gaming and everything else.

Multimedia
The Mac wins here. Right out of the box you have some cool tools for creating audio (Garage Band) and video (iMovie). And it would just work. I don't have a video camera now, but I could be confident in plugging one in and being able to edit video without a lot of trouble. Most of the good podcasters are using Macs to create their shows. Windows can do most of the same stuff, but it requires you to buy some software. (The only bundled software that MS has added to Windows since version 3.1 is a free trial of AOL). Linux is a big unknown here. There are free programs available for all of this stuff, but I'm not sure if it would Just Work. My current soundcard won't record from a mic in Linux. If I go with Linux I can't be sure whether a video camera would work with it. On the other hand, the coolest drum machine program I've ever used is Hydrogen, a free Linux app.

Gaming
Not much to say here. Game companies make versions for Windows and that's about it. I've tried running Starcraft under WINE, a Windows emulator. It's supposed to work, but I've never got it to. But, I don't do that much gaming and when I do go to a LAN party it's not that hard to find an extra machine.

Everything Else
Then there are always those programs that come up randomly. Shockwave animations won't work in Firefox under Linux. Gcompris, a kids' game that Emma loves, is built for Linux. But I can do 90% of what I want to do in Linux using Firefox, GIMP, Skype, Audacity and Bash.

Ease of Use
This category should probably go to the Mac. Things just work in a Mac. Linux is harder to use in many cases. When I plug in my card reader or my thumb drive, does it just show up as a drive? Wouldn't that be nice. I have to go to the command line and try to find out what /dev label it was given by the kernel, then I have to issue a command to mount it in my filesystem. Only then can I use the device. Windows is getting good at this kind of thing, but Windows annoys me in so many other ways that I can't really call it easy to use.

Security
I suppose that Mac and Linux tie for first and Windows finishes a very distant third place. I'm so sick of worms, viruses, spyware and adware. My Windows machine at work runs pretty clean, but it takes a lot of work. Everyday I'm updating antivirus software, scanning, checking for Windows updates, etc. Linux and Mac are both practically virus-free.

Conclusion
So, I'm very torn. I haven't decided whether I want a laptop or a desktop, either. The Mac seems like a good choice, except that it costs more and I have virtually no experience with the Mac OS. I would love to hear what you think about any of this.

An Acceptable 'Shrew'

Yesterday I went to see the honors program's depiction of Shakespeare's work to see what an acceptable version of this play was. As you might recall, when a certain Dr. C's tenure wasn't renewed, part of the hubub revolved around his rendition of TTOTS, in which females played the male roles while males played the female roles. Personally, I thought it was an ingenius way to deal with the difficult subject matter. It made the play seem more playful and in the true spirit of Shakespeare's work, in which we often see a man playing a woman playing a man, etc. As for the actual situation of the termination Dr. C's employment, I have no comment on how it all went down. But the man knew how to put on a play.

So off I went to check out what an "acceptable" version of this play would look like. As it turned out, it was set in the 1930s, for no apparent reason. The set, costumes, and music, all had the 1930s feel, but what did that feel have to do with this play? Not much, I'm afraid.

As the play began (the story has a play within a play), the introductory scene was painful to watch. One of the key actors simply didn't have the training/charisma/annunciation he needed to set the scene - it was like listening to a bunch of words that didn't necessarily have anything to do with each other.. just an endless flow that I hoped would end quickly. Thankfully, it did.

Once into the "real" play, it started getting better. Kate was an able enough Kate, and Petrucchio was.... well, he was good, but he seemed rather a wussy guy to be playing Petrucchio. The rest of the cast did well enough too. Overall, I guess it was enjoyable, but it lacked something: not enough controversy (consider the play) or dealing with the interesting themes, and not enough pizzaz. Not to say it was lackluster - it just didn't seem to be enough.

So in summary, an acceptable TTOTS is a less interesting one.

Oh by the way, someone needs to tell them where the thermostat is located. The entire audience were using their programs to fan their faces in the theatre because it was stinking HOT in there.

DBC ButtonThanks to StumbleUpon, I found another very cool website: GIMP User Group Tutorials. I've talked about GIMP before. It's a free and open source program that is similar to Photoshop. I've been using it some, but I don't have any real skills with it yet, so these tutorials should be a big help. I went through this one and it helped me create the graphic on the left. Update:

Clippy's fortunes took their first turn for the worst when it was announced in 2001 that he would not be included in Office XP.

"Office XP is so easy to use that Clippy is no longer necessary, or useful," explained Lisa Gurry, a Microsoft product manager, "Plus, if people haven't figured out how to use freaking Microsoft Word by now, they don't deserve access to a computer."

Stumbleupon.com

After going 5 days without posting last week I decided that I needed some way to find new stuff to talk about. Brendan has been using Stumbleupon for years now, so I thought I would try that. Basically, you sign up and download a toolbar for Firefox (other browsers are supported, but why would you use another browser?). When you sign up you tell them some of the things you're interested in. On the toolbar there's a button marked "Stumble!" Click it to get a random page from your chosen categories. The toolbar also has thumbs up and thumbs down buttons, so when you're on any web page (whether you stumbled to it or not) you can give it a positive or negative rating. It's a good time waster because you can keep clicking Stumble! until you find something interesting. You get a profile page (mine, Brendan's) that shows what you've said about pages you rate and it shows links to the pages that you liked. It also creates an RSS feed of links that you like. That way your friends can see what kinds of things you're stumbling upon. I included my feed here on Danny's Blog Cabin. You can see it on the right under the heading "Recent Stumbles." So, even if you don't decide to sign up, you can come here when you're bored and find some fun links.

Freecycle

Dear Brendo:

Since you're not going back to China, and you're moving back to California, I figured you might want to take a look at Freecycle. Once you figure out where you'll be living, assuming you get your own apartment, or you just need furniture, check that site out. It's all free dude. And it's not like they list tattered broken down stuff. I know someone who furnished his entire apartment thanks to that site.

Babies

I am going to a baby shower today. Not just a regular baby shower, a double baby shower. That's right, 2 people I know are having babies. The scary part about this is that they are both my age. Yesterday I went shopping for baby gifts, which is actually harder than one might think. Do you go with the pack of "onesies" hoping against the odds that they haven't already received 20 similar packs? Do you go with a baby blanket? Babies grow fast. In 6 months, nothing labeled "newborn" is going to fit those babies. Should I have bought something for a 6 month old since once the baby is 6 months old it isn't going to have anything to wear because everyone bought newborn items? Such a dilemma. I ended up with baby hats, rattles that you strap to the baby's arm, and a book about babies. This long introduction brings me to my actual point: Pacifiers. This is a public service announcement from me to anyone ever planning to have a baby. Do not let the use of a pacifier go on much pass the child's first birthday. Why, you ask? Because I have seen too many children with teeth problems or speech problems caused by use of a pacifier until they were 3 or 4. Sucking on the pacifier can cause the teeth to be pushed forward. (So can sucking the thumb). It can also a delay in speech (in extreme cases, I admit). If you are trying to get a baby to talk and he has a pacifier in his mouth, how is he going to speak? That's all. I just saw a lot of kids with pacifiers at the store yesterday and wanted to say something. I realize I don't have a baby and when I do I will probably understand why parents use them until the child is 3, but I am going to do my best not to!~Kelly

Case Closed

NBC 4 - Now You're Cooking Recipes - Investigators Say Finger In Chili Was Recipe For Hoax

Anna Ayala was arrested at her Las Vegas home Thursday night, San Jose police spokesman Enrique Garcia said. Ayala was ordered held without bond after being taken into custody on a warrant alleging grand larceny and attempted grand larceny. Police provided more details about the arrest Friday afternoon.

San Jose police now say the attempted grand larceny charge is related to the Wendy's incident. Authorities say the found finger appears to be part of an elaborate hoax.

First off, what is up with this story being placed in "Now You're Cooking Recipes" category by the news site. That's pretty darn funny. I feel bad for Wendy's. Their profits have gone down since the incident. They're giving away free frosties to Bay Area customers to try and drum up business, so that's cool.

I Am Beginning To Think Sleep Is Worthless

Ahh...I love ambition and nothing klls ambition with me, more than sleep. So last night, I got a lot of work done, why, because I didn't sleep. Today I did well on my test, I enjoyed my classes, and I didn't get much sleep. Perhaps I should follow this model more.

Umm...anyone doing anything tonight?

The Magnificent Seven (1960)

magnificentseven.jpg

I moved this up on my queue because I had just recently watched The Seven Samurai. I really enjoyed seeing them back-to-back, because there are so many small parallels that I might not have noticed if I had watched TMS a few months down the line.

While this one definitely lacks the character development that I admired so much in TSS, it still translates to the western easily. Unfortunately, while the poor villagers in TSS were likeable and actually paid attention to, Magnificent Seven glosses over the townspeople and focuses on its seven heroes. I think that's where it's not so hot.

Nevertheless, with the music of Bernstein blairing in the background (which I like in this context but don't normally enjoy), great fighting sequences that still wow a modern audience, and plenty of great old stars that all fit the cowboy personality like a glove, it's entertaining and enjoyable, as well as beautiful to watch.

The Office

The OfficeThere's a short list of shows that Sara and I never miss. NBC's The Office is the newest addition to that list. It's on Tuesdays at 9:30. You can read more about it at the official site and at TV Tome. It's based on a British sitcom of the same name. I haven't seen the original, but the American version is very funny. Steve Carell, former Daily Show correspondent, plays Michael Scott, the obliviously incompetent supervisor of an office of paper salesmen. He plays the part so that you can actually feel how uncomfortable it would be to work with him. The rest of the ensemble cast is excellent as well. There's some good talent behind the camera, too. Greg Daniels, creator, writer and executive producer, has worked on Seinfeld, The Simpsons, King of the Hill and Saturday Night Live. Give this show a try. The upcoming episode is the season finale, but they may be repeating the other episodes in the coming weeks. And if you already like the show, then you can go here and vote for it to prevent it from being canceled.

It's April 22nd and Everybody knows...

..today is Earth Day
Merry Christmas, Happy Birthday to whoever's being born
And now I'm trying hard to think of something
meaningful and worthy, kind of earthy
to make everybody ask themselves just
What are we doing here?
and what are we doing to her?
I don't know
What are we gonna do?

I think I post this every year.

That's not funny

I am a simple person. Really. I am intrigued by the most inane of events/characteristics/people/animals/etc. For example, last week I came down with the slightest of colds. Yet, my body has once again displayed it's propensity for manufacturing mucus. I'm not trying to be gross, but really, I have been over the cold for a week or so yet still have the "cough up stuff" cough. FROM WHERE DOES IT COME? (note there is no preposition at the end of that sentence Mi - Maw!) If someone has an answer that doesn't insult me, post it in the comments. - Lucas --> note that you don't need a password to post, just post and submit.

M (1931)

I have been meaning to watch this movie for about ten years! Finally, I got to see what all the talk was about. It's cinema's first serial killer, in the form of a children-killing Peter Lorre, in this German movie by Fritz Lang. Full of style, raw emotion, great direction, and a truly creepy overall feeling, I'm glad I finally saw it. Very creatively done. I love that the underworld becomes part of the hunt for the killer. Wow. Really great movie.

Gotta run. (Happy Birthday to one of my heroes, Robert Smith!)

The Screen Savers

G4TechTV was renamed to G4TV and The Screen Savers has been renamed to "Attack of the Show." This is a good thing. The crappy network will no longer be associated with the good network that it destroyed. And the The Screen Savers, one of the best shows ever, will no longer be associated with the commercialized, dumbed-down freak show that it had become. AOTS is a stupid name for a stupid show. But take heart, my geeky friends . . .

A new podcast has begun: Revenge of the Screen Savers. It's a weekly podcast featuring a rotating cast of former TSS stars. The first episode was a half hour of chat and tech news from Leo, Kevin, Robert and Patrick. It was almost like the old days. If you want to get the show, then subscribe to the LaPorte Report podcast feed.

On the first episode, Kevin Rose discussed a new project he's working on called Systm. It will be a downloadable tv show that covers tech like the Screen Savers used to.
